The American University in Cairo has officially launched its Innovation Center as a permanent platform on its New Cairo campus, where private sector companies and startups work side by side with academic researchers to address national challenges in sustainability and technology.
A New Partnership Model
The launch ceremony brought together senior government officials, policymakers, industry leaders, and entrepreneurs, aiming to reinforce the center’s mission of directly linking academic research outcomes with market needs.
The center introduces a new model of partnership between universities and industry that goes beyond traditional sponsorship of research projects toward genuine collaboration in applied innovation.
The Role of Universities
On this occasion, Dr. Ayman Ismail, Abdul Latif Jameel Chair of Entrepreneurship, Associate Professor at the Heikal Department of Management, and Founding Director and CEO of the AUC Venture Lab, stated: “Universities today play an active role as a driving force for economic development, not just as educational institutions.”
He added that AUC’s Innovation Center represents a shift in how the university engages with the private sector. Instead of focusing solely on theoretical research, the university now works closely with industry partners to develop practical solutions that meet Egypt’s needs in sustainability, construction, and technology. Ismail noted that “this initiative ensures our students gain direct market experience, while also giving companies access to the innovation needed to support their growth.”
Leveraging Expertise
The AUC Innovation Center is a leading facility that leverages the university’s research expertise, outstanding student talent, and advanced campus capabilities to deliver innovative solutions to current challenges across multiple sectors.
The center also marks a key step toward the university’s broader vision of establishing the Technology, Research and Innovation Lab (TRI-Lab) as part of the Campus 2026 initiative. By providing a unified working environment that brings together large corporations, startups, faculty members, and students, the center promotes collaboration and co-creation to develop practical solutions with wide impact across Egypt and the region.
