3 years 9 months ago

Facebook is creating a version of its image-sharing platform Instagram specifically for children under the age of 13. It aims to bring its famous products into the hands of the next generation of Internet users.

The company announced the new app internally on Thursday, but it hasn’t been launched yet. Instagram currently requires users to be at least 13 years old. BuzzFeed News has published an earlier report on Instagram Kids.

Instagram, which Facebook bought almost a decade ago for $ 1 billion, became one of the company's most popular products at a time when the main social networking feature failed to attract some young users.

Social Networking for Kids

“Increasingly kids are asking their parents if they can join apps that help them keep up with their friends. Right now there aren’t many options for parents, so we’re working on building additional products like “Messenger Kids” that are suitable for kids, managed by parents. We’re exploring bringing a parent-controlled experience to Instagram to help kids keep up with their friends, discover new hobbies and interests, and more.” Joe Osborne the spokesperson of Facebook.

Messenger Kidz is a pre-teen messaging app on Facebook; This application includes several parental control tools, but a defect in the application has previously allowed some children to chat with people whose parents did not approve of them. This incident has raised the concern of organizers that the application has not provided adequate protection for children.
