4 Innovative Technologies in Football

4 years 10 months ago

Innovation and technology make our lives easier in all aspects, and football is no exception. Different technologies allow an easier flow for football matches and allow all players and referees to enjoy the sport. Here are three technologies used in football:

  1. Video Assisted Referee - (VAR)
VAR is football’s first use of video technology, and it allows improving decision making and accuracy. A video referee reviews decisions made by the head referee with the use of video footage and a headset for communication. The technology was first introduced in 2016 according to the BBC and it will be available at the African Cup of Nations this year.

  2. Goal-line technology
This technology allows the match officials to determine whether the whole ball has crossed the goal line, which determines the eventual count of the goals. This technology includes a camera based system and magnetic fields.

  3. Electronic Performance and Tracking Systems (EPTS)
EPTS include wearable and camera-integrated technologies that used to assess and improve both the player’s and the team’s performance. According to FIFA, EPTS mainly track player positions but can also be used hand in hand with microelectromechanical devices and heart-rate monitors to measure load or physiological parameters.

  4. Vanishing Spray
Vanishing spray helps referees when a free kick has to be taken. Players will do everything to win some inches. A full, bright white line marks the position of the defensive wall and the ball on the moment of the free kick. When the free kick is taken, the line just fades away.
